NOWAVE Joins The New York Industrial Hemp Program
Everywhere you turn there are people talking about the cannabis plant in very different ways than in the past. Social media, local and national media outlets, legislatures, even medical professionals are buzzing about this revolutionary industry. Whether it’s talk about medical or recreational THC, or one of the many non-psychoactive cannabinoids in the cannabis plant such as CBD (or cannabidiol), the underlying tone is society is ready to learn what this plant has to offer. The hippy stigma surrounding cannabis is fading and now people from all walks of life are turning to CBD and consuming THC legally for many ailments in everyday life.
There are many individuals praising the medical benefits of this plant, while others are excited to conduct legal research on cannabinoids and the interactions with the human body. Much is known about the cannabis plant but the lack of extensive research in the United States has been the largest detractor to understanding its behaviors, interactions and benefits thoroughly. In New York State, doctors, professors and hemp program licensees are currently developing plans to conduct research to gain a better understanding of the 100+ cannabinoids contained in the various strains of the plant. The cannabis plant is no different than say a tomato plant as strains can be developed for specific characteristics. You can grow different tomatoes for salad, sauce or pizza just like cannabis can be grown for high THC, low THC, or for a variety of cannabinoids which provide different effects.
With the inception of the 2018 Farm Bill and it being recently signed into law, hemp has been redefined as an agricultural commodity and completely removed from the Controlled Substances Act. Currently there are 33 states including Washington DC, which have legalized cannabis for medical use. An additional 11 states have legalized adult use, including recently passed Illinois. New York legalized medical cannabis in 2014 with potential legislation being discussed now for recreational use in as early as 2020. Thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD is federally allowed in every state, and licensed companies are allowed to commercially distribute CBD products across state lines. The bill allows states to create more strict laws than the federal legislation, however, meaning states can ban CBD specifically. There are specific laws regarding CBD for each state. NOWAVE is one of the handful of companies recently granted an industrial hemp processing license in New York.
